The area of the city of Pirot is surrounded from the north and northeast by Stara Planina, with the highest peak Midžor (2,169 m a.s.l.), the southern and southwestern edges of the Pirot Basin are formed by the branches of Vlaška Planina (1442 m a.s.l.) and Suva Planina (1809 m a.s.l.), and the northwest of the Pirot Basin surrounded by the branches of the Svrljiške mountains (1334 m a.s.l.). An old ancient road passed here, known as the Via Militaris (military road), later called the Constantinople Road. The city, passing through different time periods, received different names, so during the Roman Empire, in the 3rd and 4th centuries, it had the name TURRES (tower). After that, Pyrgos, Thurib, Momčilovo grad, Kale. Archaeological research of the middle part of the town of Pirot found evidence that there was a settlement in that place 5000 years ago.
The tourism offer of Pirot and its surroundings includes natural wealth in the form of the Stara Planina Nature Park and the Jerma Special Nature Reserve, waterfalls, rivers, lakes, canyons, gorges and caves, cultural wealth in the form of traditions, culture and customs of this region of Serbia, Pirot speech, Pirot carpet making and elements from the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Serbia, the Serbian medieval fortress Momčilov grad, the Ponišavlje Museum, the stone village of Gostuša and many others, with amazing tastes and specialties of Stara Planina table and local gastronomy, an exceptional European destination for local gastronomy with many famous brands around the world, in the form of Pirot cheese, đubek, Pirot flatened sausage, Stara Planina mountain lamb, Stara Planina honey, white cheese, homemade wines and brandies.
